  • Union Minister Dr
  • Jitendra Singh on Saturday called for a national 'People's Movement' to combat the rising tide of non-communicable diseases, emphasizing early detection and evidence-based health communication as crucial for public well-being

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, on July 19, 2026, urged a nationwide "People's Movement" (Jan Andolan) to actively combat the growing menace of cancer, diabetes, obesity, and other lifestyle-related ailments. Speaking in New Delhi, the Minister underscored the necessity for India's health strategy to extend beyond traditional hospital care, focusing instead on widespread public engagement.

Dr. Singh emphasized that an effective response to the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) must prioritize early detection, accurate medical guidance, and evidence-based healthcare practices accessible to all citizens. He highlighted that while awareness is a factor, the nation also grapples with rampant health misinformation, making robust scientific communication more vital than ever. This proactive approach, he noted, is essential for realizing the broader vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' or developed India.

The Minister made these remarks during the launch of "UNBROKEN: My Battle with Cancer and the Will to Lead," a book penned by cancer survivor and distinguished scientist Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, a former Senior Adviser to the Department of Science & Technology. The event served as a platform for prominent medical professionals, members of the academic and scientific community, senior government officials, and researchers to converge and discuss pressing health challenges. The collective presence underscored the urgency and collaborative spirit required to tackle these widespread health issues across the country.

This call for a Jan Andolan signifies a strategic shift towards preventive healthcare and public empowerment, aiming to foster a healthier society by equipping individuals with accurate knowledge and promoting timely interventions.
