Digital Desk: US President Joe Biden is set to visit Israel on October 18 for talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as both countries make preparations for a potential ground invasion of Gaza.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken shared this information to the public. Additionally, according to Blinken, Biden would reaffirm Israel's "right and duty" to defend itself against Hamas. Blinken also stated that the US and Israel are collaborating to create a plan for the distribution of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.
At the UN Security Council, a resolution proposed by Russia that demanded a humanitarian truce in the current conflict between Israel and Hamas was rejected. Despite receiving five votes in favour, it was vetoed by four votes and saw six abstentions.
The resolution also criticized terrorism and acts of violence against civilians. Aid for Gaza is currently being held up at the Egyptian border while it waits for permission to cross the Rafa border, which is the only route between Gaza and Egypt. Martin Griffiths, the UN's humanitarian head, called the circumstances "the worst of times," adding that serious negotiations with Israelis, Egyptians, and other parties are taking place.
