Kolkata: BJP MLA Soumen Roy joined Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday and apologized for leaving the party two years ago.

Soumen Roy is BJP’s fourth MLA to leave the party and join TMC since the Assembly Polls.
According to reports, BJP strength in the 294- member house in West Bengal has reduced to 71.

Roy was elected from the Kaliaganj constituency.

Roy said he was not comfortable in the BJP and wanted to take part in the development initiatives by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“Though I had quit TMC my mind and soul had remained with TMC. I do not subscribe to its ideology,” Roy said

“BJP MLA Soumen Roy is returning to our fold as he wants to be part of the development of Bengal especially north Bengal,” TMC secretary Partha Chatterjee said.

“Whoever leaves the party it is his decision. But the party will seek their disqualification after asking them to explain their stand,” said Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

Soumen Roy had defeated Tapan Deb Singha of TMC by 94,948 votes in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly Election.
