Digital Desk: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated on Tuesday that his grandmother Indira Gandhi was a source of strength and that he would always protect India, saying that she "sacrificed everything" for it.

On this day in 1984, Indira Gandhi, the first and only female prime minister of India, was assassinated by her bodyguards.

On the occasion of the death anniversary of Indira Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi expressed his emotions in Hindi, writing, "My strength, my grandmother."

"I promise to defend India, for which you sacrificed everything. Rahul Gandhi stated on X, "Your memories are always with me, in my heart."

"Hundreds of salutations to my grandmother, late Indira Gandhi ji, who was a symbol of unmatched courage and struggle and the pioneer of democratic socialism, on her martyrdom day," stated his cousin and BJP MP Varun Gandhi in remembrance of Indira Gandhi.

"In addition to your resolve to make difficult choices, you also have a very straightforward and kind compassion for parenthood. Grandma, you are the real 'Mother of the Nation,'" Varun Gandhi said.

Varun Gandhi is the younger son of Indira Gandhi's son Sanjay, whereas Rahul is the son of her elder son Rajiv.
