Digital Desk: Every year on  16th October, the world observes World Anaesthesia Day to recognise the pivotal role of anaesthesia in modern medicine and to honour the dedicated professionals who make surgery safe and painless.  This day is celebrated on the basis of the first public demonstration of anaesthesia using ether in 1846, which was a medical invention that changed surgical care permanently.

On this occasion, medical organizations,  hospitals, and medical professionals all over the world unite in raising awareness by conduction seminars, exhibitions, awareness campaigns through educational campaigns. They  emphasized the fact that anaesthesia not just relieves pain but also tens of millions of lives each year

.

Anaesthesia allows patients to undergo surgeries and medical procedures without pain or distress. It also includes general anaesthesia as it renders the patient unconscious; regional anaesthesia as it numbs larger parts of the body such as an arm or a leg; and local anaesthesia as is applied on smaller parts such as removal of a tooth or a mole. The techniques are important in processes such as dental works, biopsies, and major surgeries and child birth.

In the context of rising health challenges such as cancer, the significance of anaesthesia grows even more vital. Around 80% of cancer patients require anaesthesia and surgical care during their treatment journey. Hence, the availability of safe and effective anaesthetic services is essential for global health systems.

Despite immense medical advancements, nearly 500 million people worldwide still lack access to safe anaesthesia. This way, the World Anaesthesia Day is an international call to action - create equal access, enhance training, and build up healthcare systems.

The theme for 2025, “Anesthesiology in Health Emergencies,” underscores the indispensable role of anaesthesiologists in critical and emergency care, reaffirming their position as silent guardians of patient safety across the world.
