Digital Desk: Suvrat Kakoti, popularly known as SUV, is a prominent figure in Assamese cinema, celebrated for his innovative storytelling and distinctive visual style.
Originating from Golaghat, Assam. Suvrat's early exposure to theatre through his parents and familial narratives ignited his passion for filmmaking. A pivotal moment in his journey was watching the film "3 Idiots", which solidified his ambition to pursue a career in cinema.
Despite financial challenges that hindered formal training, Suvrat's determination led him to self-educate by working as a wedding videographer. His talent and resourcefulness garnered attention within the industry, culminating in a significant opportunity when actor Ravi Sarma invited him to direct "Sri Raghupati." Released in 2023, the film became a milestone in Assamese cinema, setting new box-office records with earnings of Rs. 13.81 crore and establishing Kakoti as a formidable force in the industry.
SUV's filmmaking philosophy centers on creating narratives that resonate with the masses, reflecting their lives, emotions, and struggles. He views cinema as a medium to connect with people across diverse backgrounds, emphasizing its power to bridge gaps and foster shared experiences. His stories often explore relatable themes, ensuring his films are accessible, engaging, and deeply rooted in the cultural and social fabric of his audience.
Beyond "Sri Raghupati," Kakoti has directed critically acclaimed projects, including the web series "Bidurbhai" and "Illegal," as well as the successful film "Bidurbhai," released in 2024, which further solidified his reputation. "Bidurbhai" achieved significant box office success, earning Rs. 11.31 crore.
In recognition of his contributions, SUV received the "Best Director" award at the Prag Cine Award for Sri Raghupati. Additionally, his team was honored with the "Jury Appreciation Award" at the Achievers Awards.
Despite his success, Suvrat remains committed to crafting films that deeply resonate with audiences, believing that a story's power lies in its reflection of universal human experiences. His blend of humility and intellectual insight positions him as a key figure in the future of Assamese cinema, dedicated to meaningful, mass-oriented storytelling.
Suvrat reveals that he is more interested in making commercial films. Emphasizing the quality of cinematography during the shooting period he informs that he gathers references from different films to show it to his team before filming a shot. He sits with the team to discuss topics like scenes, dialogues, lights, and camera movements.
Suvrat directed his first film "Sri Raghupati", estimated at around Rs. 2.3 crore, at the age of 26, which was one of the most challenging films he ever made. He praises popular actor Ravi Sharma for his unwavering support during the shooting of the film.
Suvrat also recalls the time they faced financial constraints which halted their shooting. Calling it a memorable film, he further says that after all the hurdles and obstacles, the film was released in 2023.
Talking about New Year plans, Suvrat says that he has many projects in his kitty. He is overwhelmed by the love and praise he receives from the Assamese people and they have high expectations from him. So he promises to give his best to stand tall on their expectations.
