Digital Desk: Indian Meteorological Department issued a warning regarding Cyclone Mocha, which is building over the Bay of Bengal, and might intensify into a very severe storm by Friday, May 12, with wind gusts reaching 130 kmph.
On May 9, the cyclone is expected to intensify into a depression, then becoming Cyclone Mocha on May 10. The storm is forecast to approach the shores of Bangladesh and Myanmar around May 12, according to the weather department.
"A low-pressure area formed over the south-east Bay of Bengal on Monday is expected to intensify into a cyclone and likely to move towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar coast later this week," according to the IMD.
IMD authorities have warned residents not to panic because of a likely cyclone, but to be prepared for any difficult circumstances.
The IMD, further stated that the weather bureau has recommended that tourism, offshore operations, and shipping be restricted near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as well as over the sea areas of the southeast and central Bay of Bengal, till Friday.
About Cyclone 'MOCHA'-
It is to be mentioned that the cyclone will be named Mocha (Mokha), after the Red Sea port city that is credited with introducing coffee to the world over 500 years ago.
Additionally, Cyclones are given names according to regional regulations.
Rainfall expected likely in Northern West Bengal-
Light rains are expected in the northern districts of West Bengal, including Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Coochbehar, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, and Malda.
When and where is Cyclone Mocha expected to make landfall?
"A low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a depression on May 9 and further into a cyclonic storm over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of East Central Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea on May 10," IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra said in a statement.
In light of the Cyclone, the weather service has advised fishermen, ships, and small boats not to venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal.
West Bengal CM's message regarding 'Cyclone Mocha'
Mamata Banerjee stated that a meeting was convened to discuss the cyclone preparations. "Sufficient amounts of relief materials have also been kept in stock," she said.
According to the IMD, due to the expected formation of cyclogenesis over the Bay of Bengal and its movement, east and northeast India, as well as neighboring central India, are likely to see fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy showers from 11 to 17 May.
Eastern states such as Odisha, Andaman, and West Bengal have been placed on high alert due to the cyclone.
The IMD forecasts moderate rainfall in Central and Northeast India from May 11 to May 17.
