Tapan Kumar Deka, a senior IPS officer, has been designated as the IB Chief.
Digital Desk: Senior IPS officer Tapan Kumar Deka got appointed as an Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief on Friday, substituting Arvind Kumar, whose elongated tenure ends on June 30.
Tapan Kr Deka hails from Assam and has been in charge of the IB's operations division.
According to a formal order issued by the Personnel Ministry, he will take over as the next Director-General of IB for a period of two years.
Deka is an IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre who graduated in 1988. He was appointed as the Director-General of the Intelligence Bureau, making history as the first police officer from the Northeast (IB).
In addition, to oversee counterterrorism activities, this 58-year-old officer Tapan Kr Deka is currently the Special Director of IB in Jammu and Kashmir.
Deka is regarded as (National Security Advisor) NSA Ajit Doval's close aide and spent most of his time working with the Intelligence Bureau of India.
Since 1998, when he joined the Intelligence Bureau, he has never been spotted wearing a police uniform.
Deka was an AASU leader and had a master's degree in physics. He passed the Indian Police Service (IPS) exam on his first try.
Meanwhile, Samant Goel, who has been in charge of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), has extended his contract by one year, the ministry announced in a second order.
