GUWAHATI: Assam's COVID-19 tally rose to 5.98 lakh on Sunday as 259 people tested positive for coronavirus infection.

On the other hand, seven fresh fatalities pushed the state's COVID-19 death toll to 5,797.

Kamrup (M) district reported the highest number of new cases at 74, followed by Jorhat 34, Sivasagar 26 and Dibrugarh 15.

Seven fresh COVID-19 fatalities were reported each from Barpeta, Goalpara, Jorhat, Kamrup (R), Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur and Sivasagar districts.

The current death rate is 0.97 per cent. The number of active COVID-19 positive cases in the state is 3,709.

Assam has so far tested 2.30 crore samples for COVID-19, including 28,251 during the day.

On the other hand, a total of 5.87 lakh patients have recovered from the infection, including 259 on Sunday.

The overall recovery rate of COVID-19 patients is 98.19 per cent.

A total of 2.20 crore people have been inoculated in the state so far, of whom 45.79 lakh have received both doses of the vaccine.
