Digital Desk: After winning earlier this week's elections, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) retained control of the Deori autonomous council in Assam on Thursday.

BJP and AGP won 12 of the total 22 seats, while Congress only managed to win two. The Jimochhaya Peoples' Party (JPP) won seven seats, and an independent candidate took home one.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, "The resounding win of BJP and allies in Deori autonomous council election revalidates popular trust in our government driven by vision of 'adarniya' PM Shri Narendra Modi ji."

On Tuesday, there had been voting for the council, and about 80% of the total 43,595 voters had participated.

In 93 polling locations across six districts and four subdivisions, voting had taken place.

There were 75 candidates running, including 18 from the BJP, 4 from the AGP, 14 from the Congress, 7 from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), 1 from the Assam Jatiya Parishad, and 29 other candidates, including independents and JPP candidates.
