Guwahati: To compensate the loss from value-added tax (VAT) reduction on petrol and diesel, the Assam government is likely to increase excise duty of liquor, sources claimed.

Earlier, the Assam government has reduced VAT on petrol and diesel by Rs 7 per liter with immediate effect on November 3.

Notably, during the first wave of covid-19, the price of the Liquor had gone up as the government-induced 25 percent covid-19 cess on it.

But later, the prices of the Liquor were reduced ahead of the Assam assembly election.

The state government has asked the state excise department to analyze the probability of inducing the excise duty on Liquor to compensate the VAT reduced in petrol and diesel, sources said.
