Digital Desk: Following disappointing first-quarter results, Netflix has canceled an animated series created by Meghan Markle as part of cost-cutting measures.
In an email to AFP on Monday, the TV streaming giant confirmed that it would not be moving forward with the Duchess of Sussex's "Pearl," which was announced in July of last year.
The cancellation is "part of Netflix's strategic decisions around animated series," according to the company, which also announced the cancellation of other children's shows such as "Dino Daycare" and "Boons and Curses."
After leaving their royal duties in the United Kingdom, Markle and her husband, Britain's Prince Harry, signed a deal to produce content for the streaming platform.
The couple, who live in California, founded Archewell Productions, which is named after their son Archie.
The film "Pearl" was supposed to be about a 12-year-old girl who is inspired by historical women.
Archewell Productions "remains a valued partner," according to Netflix, and the two companies are "continuing to collaborate on a number of projects, including the upcoming documentary series Heart of Invictus."
Last month, Netflix reported a drop in subscribers for the first time in a decade, causing its stock to plummet.
The Silicon Valley tech firm said it had 221.6 million subscribers at the end of the first quarter of this year, down about 200,000 from the previous quarter.
Prince Harry and Meghan announced in 2020 that they would produce a documentary series about the Invictus Games for wounded servicemen and women, which he has long supported.
Netflix attributed the decline to the suspension of its service in Russia as a result of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
In America's TV streaming wars, Disney demonstrated earlier this year that it was closing the gap with market leader Netflix.
