H3N2 Outbreak: 1 dead in Karnataka from H3N2 influenza, Reports Health Ministry

Digital Desk: In Karnataka, one person was reported dead from influenza caused by the H3N2 virus. According to Health Ministry authorities, the individual was a resident of Hassan district. This comes only days after Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar stated that there was no need for concern about the H3N2 virus.

Over the last few months, India has seen a dramatic outbreak of H3N2 influenza, with hospitals across the country reporting thousands of cases. The influenza A virus (H3N2) is a kind of influenza virus. Every year, it is a respiratory viral infection that causes disease.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the H3N2 virus is associated with more hospitalisations than other subtypes.

As said by former AIIMS-Delhi Director Dr. Randeep Guleria, influenza sufferers appear with a fever, sore throat, cough, bodily aches, and runny nose. Diarrhoea, vomiting, and shortness of breath are additional symptoms.

As indicated by the ICMR, the fever goes away after three days, but the cough might last up to three weeks.

As per Dr. Randeep Guleria, there is an increase in instances because the virus evolved and people's protection against it has decreased.  

In this influenza outbreak, the ICMR issued an advisory urging individuals to avoid self-medication and the use of antibiotics. The ICMR recommends paracetamol in cases of fever and body discomfort.

Dr. Randeep Guleria suggests wearing masks in busy locations, washing hands often, and keeping a physical distance.
