Digital Desk: The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared COVID-19 no longer a global health emergency on Friday, a significant step towards the end of the epidemic that has killed over 6.9 million people, devastated the global economy, and ravaged communities.

The WHO's emergency committee declared COVID to be at its highest level of alert more than three years ago, on January 30, 2020. The situation promotes collaboration on vaccines and treatments while bringing a health risk to the attention of the entire world.

Lifting it is an indication of the world's progress in these areas, but the WHO has stated that COVID-19 is here to stay, even though it no longer poses an emergency.

The death rate has fallen from an all-time high of more than 100,000 people per week in January 2021 to just over 3,500 in the week to April 24, as per WHO data.
