Since women were forbidden from working at UN agencies, 3,300 male and female employees of the organisation have stayed at home, according to the UN.
Digital Desk: The Taliban in
Afghanistan's Herat province on Monday barred families and women from eating at a restaurant in establishments with gardens or green spaces, Fox News reported.
Religious leaders complained that there was gender mixing in these settings, which led to the decision. The limitations were put in place, according to Afghan officials, because of gender mixing or because women are supposedly not covering their heads with the hijab. The ban applies to restaurants with green spaces in the Herat province only.
Only places in Herat on such premises are subject to the prohibition on outdoor dining remaining open to men. A deputy official from the directorate of the Ministry of Vice and Virtue in Herat named Baz Mohammad Nazir refuted media allegations that all eateries were off-limits to families and women, characterising them as misinformation, according to Fox News.
He said that it only applied to eateries with outdoor green spaces, like parks, where men and women could meet. " We imposed restrictions and shut down these restaurants in response to numerous complaints from academics and regular people."
Head of the Vice and Virtue directorate in Herat, Azizurrahman Al Muhajir, said, "It was like a park but they named it a restaurant and men and women were together. Thank God it has now been fixed. Also, our auditors are examining every park that both men and women visit."
Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, they have implemented several limitations; this one being the most recent. They have barred girls from attending schools past the sixth grade and women from universities and the majority of employment, including those at the UN. They are also prohibited from using public facilities like gyms and parks.
According to Tolo News,
the European Union (EU) linked aid to the Taliban with the lifting of the restriction on Afghan women working.
According to the EU, aid to Afghanistan cannot be provided independently of gender and that aid activity will be reviewed since the restriction on women working for UN organisations breaches international law.
Since women were forbidden from working at UN agencies, 3,300 male and female employees of the organisation have stayed at home, according to the UN.
The situation of women in Afghanistan has become worse since the Taliban took power there in August 2021. In this nation, women are not allowed to hold positions of authority and are not permitted to work or travel without a male companion.
However, the Taliban promised to reopen all schools on March 23 this year, but, instead, they closed secondary institutions for girls on that day.
It is yet unknown when or if these schools will reopen, or whether the prohibition is temporary.
