First AI-controlled mother ship launched in China, capable of launching dozens of drones

China has created a ship with no crew that can transport dozens of drones.

Digital Desk: China has launched the world's first unpiloted drone carrier, which navigates the open ocean independently using artificial intelligence (AI technology).

Although Beijing has designated the ship as a maritime research vessel, some experts believe it can be utilized as a military vessel.

According to the shipbuilder, CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipping Co., the autonomous ship, the Zhu Hai Yun (shown below), is roughly 290 feet long, 45 feet wide, and 20 feet deep and can carry dozens of air, sea, and submersible drones equipped with various observation instruments.

According to the report, the ship is described as "epoch-making" and the "world's first intelligent unmanned system mother ship."

On the other hand, drone mothership might be used by China's military to gather intelligence in the disputed South China Sea, which numerous countries claim.

In recent years, China has become more forceful in its claims to maritime sovereignty and has increased its military presence.

According to the South China Morning Post, the ship was first unveiled in May and is anticipated to be delivered by the end of 2022 after passing sea trials.

According to the shipbuilder, the ship will be remotely controlled and capable of traveling at a maximum speed of 18 knots, or roughly 20 miles per hour.

The ship is a new "marine species," according to Chen Dake, the laboratory's director, who told the state-run Science and Technology Daily in 2021 that it will change ocean surveillance.

China is already the largest shipbuilder in the world and aspires to become a "maritime great power."
