No more pe pe po po, soon vehicle horns will start playing Indian music: Nitin Gadkari

New Delhi: Soon the citizens of India will experience the sounds of Indian musical instruments while pressing the horn pad of their vehicles. In an attempt to think out of the box, to curb the issue of noise pollution in the Country, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that music from instruments like flute, tabla, violin, mouth organ and harmonium would be used as a horn for the vehicles in India.

Speaking at the highway inauguration event on Monday, Minister Gadkari said, “The Central government is planning to introduce a law under which only the sound of Indian musical instruments can be used as a horn in vehicles.”

He added that not only the conventional sounds of vehicles would be replaced, but even sirens on an ambulance and police vehicles would get a melodious tune.

Reportedly, a tune of All India Radio (AIR) will be used in the ambulances so that people feel pleasant while the ambulance passes by.

“It is so irritating to hear the horns especially when ambulance and Ministers pass by. The sirens are used at full volume and this harms the eardrums. So, I am studying to make a new law to make it sound pleasant.” said Gadkari.

Recently, commenting about the use of Indian musical instruments sounds as vehicle horns, noted singer Zubeen Garg said, “Horns can’t be tabla, harmonium, violin; it is a musical instrument and can create it only in studio. If it happens then we will lose our work.”

Further, Garg mockingly said that Union Minister Nitin Gadkari should use it in his vehicle and not experiment on others.

As per several studies conducted, both in India and other countries, vehicular sound plays a great role in urban areas. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) have found that Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai are among others to be the noisiest city in the country.
The government mandates that noise levels in residential areas should not exceed 55 db during the day and 45 at night.
