Union Home Minister Amit Shah called it a "historic day" for the Northeast when Assam and Meghalaya inked a deal on Tuesday to resolve their five-decade-old border dispute in six of the 12 places.
In the presence of Shah and the Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya, Himanta Biswa Sarma and Conrad Sangma, respectively, the agreement was signed.
The agreement will end the long-running disagreement in six of the 12 points along the 884.9-kilometre boundary between the two countries.
At a Ministry of Home Affairs ceremony here, Shah stated, "This is a momentous day for the Northeast."
According to the home minister, the signing of the agreement has settled 70% of the border dispute between the two countries.
There are 36 communities in the six locations, totalling 36.79 square kilometres, for which an agreement has been reached.
