Sheikh Shahjahan, TMC leader accused in Sandeshkhali violence case, arrested
The 53-year-old Trinamool strongman has been picked up from the Minakhan area in North 24 Parganas and will be produced in court today

Digital Desk: The Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan was apprehended on Thursday morning following a 55-day period of disappearance. Sheikh Shahjahan is accused by multiple women of sexual assault and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal.

As per senior police official Aminul Islam Khan, the 53-year-old Trinamool strongman will be presented in court today after being apprehended from the Minakhan region in North 24 Parganas.

Three days before the arrest, the Calcutta High Court declared that "he should be arrested" and chastised the state police for their inaction in prosecuting the Trinamool leader.

Shajahan Sheikh and his allies have been accused by many women in Sandeshkhali of land grabs and forced sexual assault. For almost a month, the riverine area has been the center of protests calling for the arrest of Sheikh and his collaborators.

In response to the arrest, West Bengal BJP President Suvendu Adhikari stated that the Mamata Banerjee government was "forced to take action due to the continuous agitation by the BJP."

"Denial was the government's mode. They weren't even acknowledging that anything had actually occurred. We would force the administration to arrest Sheikh Shahjahan, as I had previously stated. The government and Mamata Banerjee are forced to arrest Sheikh Shahjahan today because of the BJP's and the women of Sandeshkhali's agitation," he stated.

Since January 5, when a crowd purportedly connected to him fought Enforcement Directorate officers who had gone to inspect his property in connection with a scam, Shajahan has been missing.

Fifty allegations of "sexual abuse and land grab" against the Trinamool leader and his accomplices have been filed by tribal families with the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes. 400 of the over 1,250 complaints that state government representatives reported they had received had to do with land-related matters.

On March 4, the High Court is scheduled to hear the case against Shahjahan.

The Trinamool Congress politician may also be taken into custody by the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), according to a Wednesday ruling by the High Court. But another Solicitor General of India, SV Raju, who was representing the ED, voiced concern that if Sheikh is arrested by the state police, the state police would weaken the case.
