Supreme Court 'not satisfied' with probe in Lakhimpur Kheri case; next hearing on October 20

New Delhi: Supreme Court (SC) today ordered the next hearing on the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. The court stated that it is 'not satisfied' with the action taken so far by the state government in investigating violence case. 

After the Uttar Pradesh government registered status report in the case, the apex court said, "The highest police officer must defend the evidence in the case. Why wasn't the accused held immediately? Why are they not treated like any other citizen? The local police has not done the job properly."

The court posted the concern for hearing directly after puja vacations, i.e., October 20 at 10:30 am. 

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) moreover told the Uttar Pradesh government to ask its DGP to assure that the evidence in the Kheri violence case is defended until another agency takes it over.

The minister's son Ashish Mishra did not appear before the police at 10 am on Friday, informed sources. However, Upendra Agarwal, who is overseeing the probe team, arrived at the office on time.

On Monday, following Kheri violence, the police registered a case against the son of minister of State of Home Affairs, Ajay Mishra Teni, Ashish Mishra and 13 others following violence that erupted throughout a farmers' protest in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur on October 3.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath stated that he felt sad about the UP violence on October 3. Yogi said he would take strict actions against those involved with the violence following an investigation.

Farmers unions stated that two of the protesters were run over by a vehicle in the minister's convoy, in which his son and other relatives were seated. The officer stated the other four who died were occupants of the vehicle that allegedly ran over the farmers.
