Guwahati: Assam stands in the highest crime rate against women in the nation for the fourth consecutive year, reveal National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) figures for 2020.
Crime in India 2020, reports stated that the rate of crime against women in Assam was 154.3 per 100,000 populations, Odisha second with 112.9 and Delhi third with 106.4.
The report of NCRB said, in 2017, the crime against women in Assam was 143.3, in 2018, it was 166, and in 2019 the criminal record was 177.
In 2019, the crime against women in Assam was 30,025, and in 2018 it was 27,687.
The report said, Assam reported 26 cases of rape-cum-murder/gang rape, the highest figure in the nation after Uttar Pradesh (31) and Madhya Pradesh (27). Moreover, 4,642 cases of assault with the intention of outraging modesty were also reported.
“The figures could also indicate that, unlike states where such crimes are not registered promptly, in Assam, survivors reach out to police,” said a senior police officer quoted Hindustan Times.
Assam has also reported an increase in dowry deaths cases of 150 in 2020 and four cases of acid attacks on women.
“The issue is quite serious. Earlier, we didn’t record such a high number of dowry deaths. It could also be that more women are reporting crimes than those in other states.” stated Assam State Commission for Women, Chairperson, Chikimiki Talukdar, quoted by Hindustan Times.
Last year, the total cases of 11,408 registered in Assam were of cruelty by relatives or husband.
Also, the state recorded 1,496 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act, out of which 1,049 were of rape, 322 of sexual assault, and 120 of sexual harassment.
The report of NCRB also stated that Manipur and Assam also recorded the highest cases of sedition. In contrast, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand recorded the highest Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act cases.
