LGBI airport handed over to Adani Guwahati International Airport Limited

Guwahati: Multinational conglomerate Adani group took charge of the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) airport on Friday for developing and modernizing the Northeast foremost airport.

At an event held on Thursday midnight, the Director of Airports Authority of India (AAI), Ramesh Kumar, handed over the symbolic keys of the LGBI airport to the Adani Guwahati International Airport Limited (AGIAL) Chief Airport Officer Utpal Baruah.

A press statement read, "Beginning the process of developing and modernizing the Northeast's foremost airport, the symbolic key of the airport was handed over by Ramesh Kumar, Airport Director of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to Utpal Baruah, Chief Airport Officer of the new airport operator at an event held midnight."

"From Friday onwards, the operations, management and development responsibilities of Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport will be handled by the new airport operator Adani Guwahati International Airport Limited (AGIAL)." the statement added.

In a bid to develop the country's airports, the government of India in 2018 included the LGBI airport in the group of six airports including Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Mangalore, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram to privatize for 50 years.

Adani Enterprise Limited succeeded to get the bid for all six airports.

Earlier, in January 2021, AAI and Adani group signed an agreement in New Delhi.

Reportedly, in the first three years, the AAI operators will support the new employees of the AGIAL.

The employees of the AAI will be posted to other airports, the report said.

As per the report, only the security and air traffic communication section will be looked by the AAI employees.

Recently, answering a query about the renaming of LGBI airport, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted that there is no planning of changing the name of LGBI airport to Adani Guwahati International Airport Limited.

"Till Narendra Modi ji and I am here it can't be change." said CM Sarma.

There is a prediction that the present government will change the name of LGBI airport.

Earlier, political parties in Assam, including Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Congress and several organizations, staged a protest against the government decision to privatized the LGBI airport.
