Mizoram Minister Honors Couples With Most Children

Aizwal: To boost population growth, Mizoram sports minister, Robert Romawia Royte, awarded Rs. 2.5 lakh and mementos to 17 parents bragging about having the most children in his constituency of Aizwal East-II.

Earlier, in June, on Father’s Day, Royte esteemed parents with the highest number of children within his constituency.

He gave a prize of Rs. 1 lakh in cash to Ngurauvi, a widow from the Tuithiang area, who has 15 children; out of them, seven are sons.

While, Lianthangi, a resident of Chhinga Veng locality who has 13 children, was given a second prize of Rs. 30,000 and a citation and two women and a man, who have 12 children each, were awarded the third prize of Rs. 20,000 each and citations.

Moreover, 12 parents, who have eight children each, were given consolation prizes of Rs. 5,000 each and citation.

Speaking to PTI, Royte expressing his concern about decreasing birth rate among the Mizo population said, “The decreasing growth rate of the Mizo population has become a serious concern, so such initiative will help overcome this serious issue in the coming days.”

“Per square kilometer there are 52 people and in a bid to achieve the national average, it should be at least 94 people per square kilometer. In Mizoram population, there is 87 percent of Mizo tribes,” he claimed.

Although, the government census showed that in 2011 the state’s population stands at 10.97 lakh, an increase of 23.48 percent over the previous census held in 2001.

Reports also stated that some local churches in the state pay cash to Mizo couples, who have more than three children.

Notably, states including Assam and Uttar Pradesh have announced a two-child policy to curb population growth.
