Guwahati: Devoted to Hindu deity Vishwakarma, the Vishwakarma temple situated at Guwahati is claimed to be one of the oldest and few temples in the world dedicated to the Lord of the celestial engineer of the Universe.

In Rig Veda, Lord Vishwakarma is considered one of the original creators of the cosmos.

Historians and the locals claimed that the Vishwakarma temple situated at the base of the popular Kamakhya Temple in the foothills of Nilachal hills, established in the year 1965, was founded by a priest of the Kamakhya temple, Bhabakanta Sarmah, in association with Mahabir Prasad Dhirasaria.

Every year, probably in the entire country, Vishwakarma puja is celebrated with much enthusiasm in the world’s first Vishwakarma temple. Devotees from across the state gather here to seek blessings from the deity.

This year, Vishwakarma puja will be celebrated on September 17. The Vishwakarma puja Sankranti time will start at 1:29 AM.

Lord Vishwakarma is hailed as the engineer of the Gods, and he is one of the deities who finds a mention in the Rig Veda. He is said to have come into being on Kanya Sankranti day. Therefore, the date of Vishwakarma puja, more or less remains the same every year as per the Gregorian calendar. Architects, carpenters, engineers, technicians, mechanics and sculptors worship him and therefore, special pujas are organised at factories, mills and workshops to honour the engineer of the Universe.
