Digital Desk: Former India cricketer Salim Durani passed away on Sunday at the age of 88. The Kabul-born cricketer was known for his slow, left-arm orthodox style and hitting ability as a batsman. He took 75 wickets in 29 Tests, including three five-wicket hauls. He was living in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with his younger brother, Jahangir Durrani.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid heartfelt homage to the former Indian cricketer on Twitter.
"Salim Durani Ji was a cricketing legend, an institution in himself. He made a key contribution to India’s rise in the world of cricket. On and off the field, he was known for his style. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace", honorable PM wrote.
According to a Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) official, the former India star fell at home and underwent proximal femoral nail surgery.
"Dr. Nehal Shah performed proximal femoral nail surgery on Durani's fractured thigh bone on Friday between 4 and 6 p.m. in Jamnagar. Oxygen is being given to him, and he is conscious. His cousin Sajid is by his side right now," Jaypalsinh Jadeja said.
Jaypalsinh runs the Pranami Global School Cricket Academy, which provides cricket coaching to children.
"Durani had a fall at his residence on Wednesday evening. I and Narendra Raithatha received information about this from an ex-councilor Vinu Dhurv, father of former Ranji cricketer Rakesh Dhurv . We returned home the next morning and took him to the hospital on Thursday," Jaypalsinh said.
The famous cricketer made an appearance in Bollywood in 1973, playing the lead role opposite Praveen Babi. During his playing days, he was known for his fashion sense and stylish personality.
