Digital Desk: Nikhat Zareen, the country's World Boxing Champion, will lead India's team in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Lovlina Borgohain, a bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympic Games, will join Nikhat in leading the CWG campaign.
The Commonwealth Games will be held from July 28 to August 8, 2022. India's women's boxing squad for the Commonwealth Games 2022 was announced on June 10.
Meanwhile, the four boxers representing India in the Commonwealth Games are Nikhat, Lovlina, Nitu, and Jasmine.
Nikhat, who recently made history at the World Boxing Championships, will compete in the 50kg division, Lovlina in the 70kg division, Nitu in the 48kg division, and Jasmine in the 60kg division after winning the trials.
Nitu (48kg) and Jasmine (60kg) also made it into the four-member Indian women's team following hard-fought triumphs in their finals during the three-day trials held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
Lovlina and Nikhat both won 7-0 in their respective categories, putting up impressive performances. In the 70kg category, Lovlina defeated Pooja, while in the 50kg division, Nikhat defeated Minakshi.
Nitu won a remarkable come-from-behind 5-2 victory over 2019 World Championships silver medalist Manju Rani in the day's first bout. Despite losing the opening round, Nitu fought back admirably in an outbreak in which both fighters gave each other a hard time.
In the lightweight final, Jasmine faced a stiff test from Parveen, the bronze medalist from the 2022 World Championships, but she won by a 6-1 scorecard.
The Boxing Federation of India has chosen a 12-member Indian boxing contingent for the forthcoming Birmingham Games, which will take place from July 28 to August 8, based on the results of the tryouts.
After triumphs in the trials earlier this month, Shiva Thapa (63.5kg), Amit Panghal (51kg), Mohammad Hussamuddin (57kg), Rohit Tokas (67kg), Sumit (75kg), Ashish Kumar (80kg), Sanjeet (92kg), and Sagar (+92kg) have won their spots in the men's section.
