Kabul: Ending the twenty years of war, the last US troops flew out of Afghanistan, Taliban celebrated their total return to power with gunfire.
The United States', longest military conflict came to an end, on Monday night when its forces abandoned Kabul's airport and airlifted more than 123,000 people.
Taliban fighters then swept into the Kabul airport fired guns into the sky across the city, celebrating an astonishing return after US forces invaded in 2001 and toppled them for supporting the Al-Qaeda.
"Congratulations to Afghanistan… this victory belongs to us all," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told reporters. Taliban's victory was a "lesson for other invaders,” said Zabuhullah.
Many Afghans are terrified of the return of the Taliban and their infamous brutal treatment towards girls and women, as well as their brutal justice system.
However, the Taliban had promised several times that there would be more tolerant rule compared to their first stint in power. "We want to have good relations with the US and the world. We welcome good diplomatic relations with them all," Mujahid said.
Mujahid also insisted Taliban security forces would "be gentle and nice".
