'End of an era,' says Mark Zuckerberg as Sheryl Sandberg stepped down as Meta COO

Sheryl Sandberg has been linked with Facebook for the past 14 years.

Digital Desk: Meta With a speech reminiscing on their journey together, Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg waved farewell to his second-in-command Sheryl Sandberg.

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's parent company's chief operating officer, announced her departure from the firm on June 2 after 14 years.

Her departure was called the "end of an era" by Mark Zuckerberg.

"You've architected our advertisements business, hired outstanding people, formed our management culture, and taught me how to run a company in the 14 years we've worked together," Zuckerberg stated in response to Sandberg's goodbye letter on Facebook.

According to the Meta CEO, Sandberg has been a lifelong buddy, and their friendship is deep-rooted.

"I'm going to miss working alongside you every day, he added. "Thank you so much for everything you've done for my family, our company, and millions of others worldwide. You're an absolute legend."

Sandberg described how she met Zuckerberg at a party in her farewell note for the first time.

"Mark's idea that people will put their true selves online to connect with other people was so enthralling," she continued, "that we stood by that door and spoke for the rest of the night."

Sandberg stated that she was offered a position by Zuckerberg months after the meeting, but she stated three conditions in front of him.

"That we'd sit next to each other, that he'd meet with me one-on-one every week, and that in those sessions, he'd offer me honest feedback when he thought I'd made a mistake," Sandberg continued.

"Mark replied yes to all three, but only if the feedback was reciprocal. He has honored his pledges to this day. We still sit together (not through COVID), meet one-on-one once a week, and get direct and honest feedback."

"He was just 23 when we met, and I was already 38," she explained, "but we've been through the ups and downs of operating this company together."

Working with Zuckerberg was an "honor and pleasure of a lifetime," commented Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg.

Sheryl intends to focus on charity work after her departure.
