Global Trade War: Canada, Mexico Announce Retaliatory Tariffs Against US

Digital Desk: Canada and Mexico imposed retaliatory tariffs against the United States following US President Donald Trump's decision to impose 25% tariffs on all imports from Mexico and Canada. President Donald Trump on Saturday signed an executive order to impose tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China. Justifying the tariffs against the three countries, Trump said that this move would reduce illegal immigration in the US and limit the poisonous fentanyl and other contraband drugs from entering the US.

Trump imposed 25% tariffs on all goods except energy products from Canada. Both energy products from Canada and Chinese goods would now face 10% tariffs under the new executive order.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs of 25% on American goods worth 155 billion Canadian dollars.

Canadian PM criticizes US tariffs as a violation of the free trade agreement. Imposing the retaliatory tariffs at a news conference Trudeau said, "Tariffs violate a free trade agreement that was negotiated a few years ago. Tariffs will have real consequences for the American people. This will include immediate tariffs on C$30 billion worth goods as of Tuesday. This will be followed by further tariffs on C$125 billion worth of American products in 21 days time."

Slamming the decision to impose tariffs on Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum on Saturday wrote on X, "We categorically reject the White House's slander against the Mexican government of having alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of intervention in our territory."

She added, "Problems are not resolved by imposing tariffs, but by talking and dialoguing, as we did in the recent weeks with your State Department to address the phenomenon of migration; in our case, with respect for human rights... I instruct the Secretary of Economy to implement Plan B that we have been working on, which includes tariff and non-tariff measures in defence of Mexico's interests."

China also opposed the new tariffs and vowed countermeasures. The Asian country threatened the US that it would file a lawsuit in the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the US's unfair practice.

Chinese Foreign Ministry in a statement said, "The unilateral imposition of tariffs by the US seriously violates WTO rules. It does not contribute to resolving its own issues, but also undermines normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the US."
