Digital Desk: Up until the last few years, Anita Anand, who has been a member of parliament for the Guelph since 2015, and is now Canada’s Minister of Transport, was not deemed a major contender for the PM post when Trudeau would no longer be capable of serving. If elected, Anand would be the first woman of colour, and the first woman of Indian origin, to become Canada’s Prime Minister. It is a historical outstanding feature in Canadian politics that she could have been a leader.
On 6th January 2025, Justin Trudeau stated his intention to pass the baton in the following months after nine years of his rule. The move was made at the time when the voters’ support for his Liberal Party was declining in the pre-election surveys and from the pressure inside the party. The Prime Minister Trudeau was able to point at the following reasons: the need for change in the leaders for the people of Virginia to enjoy the new leadership.
Trudeau’s term has been somewhat recently spoiled by the tensions between Canada and India, largely because of Trudeau’s reckless decisions to appoint people with connections to the banned Khalistan organization. Relations were further strained after June 2023, when leading Khalistani militant Hardeep Singh Nijjar was assassinated, in response to which Trudeau has restricted visa for Indian students. This move was not welcomed and over 20 Liberal Party called for his resignation.
Currently 57 year old Anita Anand is one of the five strong parliamentary contenders to replace Trudeau. Anand who was born to Tamil Nadu-origin parents, has done her graduation in Political Science in Queen’s University and his law graduation in Dalhousie University and Oxford University and did her Master in Laws in University of Toronto. She first joined politics in 2019, and represented Oakville, a suburb of Toronto, and she is active member of the Liberal Party.
Having a long-run of political engagement, Anand pointed out political contributions in her career. During the COVID-19 pandemic as the Minister of Public Services and Procurement, she has needed vaccines. She has served as the Minister of Defence in 2021, through which she deals with the big things like Ukraine’s role in fighting Russia- Ukraine war or Canadian Armed Forces’ personnel issues. Even after being transferred to the Treasury Board in a much-debated restructuring of the government, Anand did not demote at all. Organized in December 2024, she became the Transport Minister, which also strengthened her leadership experience to become the head of the Liberal Party and the country.
