Enjoy eating your favorite cake with natural colorants...

Digital Desk: The Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department is on high
alert after detecting unsafe artificial colors in cakes sampled from different
bakeries within the state. This unsettling information comes exactly two months
after raising awareness which has have been received over infectious elements
of certain types of street foods including the popular; Kebabs, Manchurian and
    Pani Puri.

Earlier in  August, 12 out of 235 cake samples were found to have high levels of artificial coloring, posing health threats to those who consume such cakes. The colors posing high threats include:
    1.  Allura red
    2.  Sunset Yellow
    3.   Lemon yellow
    4.  Maroon.
Every single one of these specific types of cakes can pose a high risk of cancer due to excessive usage of such synthetic colors, especially in flavors like Red Velvet and Black Forest.

Vibrant colors, often used in red velvet cake, black forest cake, and other popular cake varieties, pose health threats if the safe limits are exceeded since they increase the risk of getting cancer and even affect the mental and physical health as well.

Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department has ordered bakeries to adhere to safety practices. Some bakeries that had their samples declared unsafe have however promised to use safer products and have retested their samples.

Moreover, health risk is part of a wider food safety issue that is being addressed in Karnataka. The state has recently banned certain artificial food colorants, such as Rhodamine B in street food due to the potential health threat posed by these practices. Food safety of such additives has mostly been covered by the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 and its subordinate legislation enacted in 2011.

According to Dr.  Karthigaiselvi a nutritionist, the potential effects of artificial colors include:

    • Blue is related to brain tumors in mice.
    • Green is related to bladder cancer.
    • Yellow can cause mild allergic reactions and cancers of the adrenal glands and kidneys.
    •  Red is considered a possible risk factor for thyroid tumors.

Therefore, many bakeries now offer cakes made with organic ingredients. These options are not only healthy but can also be just as delicious and visually appealing.
