Digital Desk: A 16-year-old girl from Mumbai has made history by successfully scaling Mount Everest, becoming the youngest Indian mountaineer to conquer the world's highest peak from the Nepal side, the Indian Navy announced on Thursday. Kaamya Karthikeyan, a Class 12 student from Navy Children School in Mumbai, along with her father Cdr S Karthikeyan, began their expedition to the summit of Mount Everest (8,849 meters) on April 3. The pair reached the peak on May 20.
In a tweet commending her achievement, the Western Naval Command shared a picture of Kaamya and noted, "After this feat, she has become the second-youngest girl in the world and the youngest Indian mountaineer to summit the world's highest peak from the Nepal side.”
Kaamya's accomplishment is the latest in a series of impressive feats. She has already successfully climbed the highest peaks on six continents. Her next goal is to tackle Mount Vinson Massif in Antarctica this December, aiming to become the youngest girl to complete the '7 Summits challenge.'
In 2020, Kaamya became the youngest girl in the world to climb Mount Aconcagua, the tallest peak in South America and outside of Asia. The Indian Navy praised her for showing immense courage and resilience in her mountaineering endeavors.
"Indian Navy wishes young Kaamya the very best in her aspiration to summit the highest peaks of all seven continents, becoming the youngest girl to do so. #7SummitsChallenge," the Navy stated.
