Digital Desk: Authorities at Chandigarh University have called off classes for six days until September 24 in response to loud student protests over claims that a hosteller had captured and circulated unpleasant films of a number of female students.
Around 1:30 am on Monday, protests were suspended when the administration agreed to the students' requests.
Two hostel wardens have been suspended as part of additional measures taken by the varsity. The time of the hostels has also altered, and all of the wardens are being transferred.
Why does Violence Occur?
After midnight on Saturday, there were large-scale protests on campus because students claimed that 'private' and 'objectionable' films of a number of female dormitory residents had been posted online.
Authorities have so far arrested three people in connection with the suspected creation and distribution of inappropriate videos of female students at the university: a student, a 23-year-old guy from Himachal Pradesh who is rumoured to be her lover, and his 31-year-old acquaintance.
The students said that there were leaked videos of approximately 60 girls taking baths in the hostel. However, the university said in a statement that only one video had been circulated. Furthermore, the accused recorded and distributed it. According to them, the girl produced the video and shared it with her friend in Himachal Pradesh on her own.
Claims made by the authorities
After a day-long protest, rumours that the university was trying to hide the truth abounded. The administration has always refuted allegations that distressing students had attempted suicide and that videos of numerous female students in the varsity hostel had been made and disseminated on social media.
"No student committed suicide. According to preliminary investigation, the accused teenager sent her own photos and videos to her boyfriend. There was nothing else discovered. FIR filed. Police are investigating. I urge parents and students not to take any rumours seriously, " the chancellor stated.
The accused student appeared to have shared a video of herself with the young male, according to Punjab's Additional Director General of Police Gurpreet Deo, and no other students' objectionable videos were discovered.
Officials stated that an FIR has been filed in the case under IPC section 354-C (voyeurism) and the IT Act, and that additional investigation is ongoing.
Government ordered a high-level investigation
A high-level investigation into the incident has been launched, according to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. "It is regrettable to learn of the Chandigarh University event. Our pride is in our daughters. A high-level investigation into the occurrence has been mandated. Anyone found guilty will face harsh punishment. I communicate with the administration frequently. I urge everyone to stay away from rumours."
Harjot Singh Bains, the state's minister of education, has urged the university's students to remain calm. He declared that no one guilty will be spared.
