Digital Desk: In a tragic incident, on Wednesday night, during the immersion of Goddess Durga's idol at least eight persons perished in a flash flood in the Mal River in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri. As there are still a number of persons missing, the death toll could increase. The occurrence happened in Mal Bazar.
An eight-year-old child and a thirteen-year-old girl were among the deceased.
The idol immersion was immediately stopped following the event. The government managed to save about 40 people. The rescue effort also involves local officials. On the festival of Bijoy Dashami, the crowd gathered for the idol immersion at the Mal river bank.
"Near around nine o'clock in the evening, several individuals had gathered at the Mal river bank. The immersion of idols there was quickly stopped by the administration.
Seven bodies had been discovered by Wednesday night's late hour. Nearly 40 people who were caught in the flash flood and stuck on a nearby island have been rescued "Jalpaiguri District Magistrate Moumita Godara Basu was quoted as saying by IANS.
The prime minister, Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the occurrence. PM Modi said, "Anguished by the mishap during Durga Puja festivities in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones."
The search for the missing people continues as a rescue effort.
A BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari sent condolences to the bereaved families and pleaded with Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, to speed up the rescue operations.
Adhikari tweeted, "Saddening news coming from Jalpaiguri as flash flood in Mal river during Durga Puja immersion swept away many people. Few deaths have been reported till now. I request the DM of Jalpaiguri &
@chief_west to urgently step up rescue efforts & provide assistance to those in distress."
