Digital Desk: The birth anniversary of the brilliant poet Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan, also known by his pen name "Ghalib,"  is marked on December 27 each year. He is still celebrated as a revered poet, not only in India but around the world. In 1797, Mirza Ghalib was born in the then-Mughal-controlled Kala Mahal in Agra. Ghalib used to write in both the Urdu and Persian languages. However, he is best known for his Urdu couplets, also known as shayaris. Ghalib is thought to have started writing poetry when he was 11 years old. He was also assigned as Bahadur Shah Zafar II's tutor and, afterwards, as his eldest son Prince Fakhr-ud Din Mirza's instructor.

Ghalib used to write about anything and everything under the sun, from romance to current events. In 1850, the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, bestowed upon him the title "Dabir-ul-Mulk," which is equal to nobility.
