Haryana violence: Social media under scrutiny, Mobile internet to remain suspended till August 5 in Nuh
The minister urged people to use social media responsibly and avoid posting anything that can spark violence.

Digital Desk: Anil Vij, the home minister for Haryana, said on Wednesday that social media played a major role in the violence in Nuh. He also announced that a three-person committee had been established by the state government to keep an eye on social media activity starting on July 21.

"The violence in Nuh has been significantly fueled by social media. A three-person committee that will be charged with keeping an eye on social media activity starting on July 21 has been constituted by the state administration in response to this worry.

Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and others would be carefully inspected/scanned for any offensive posts, according to Vij," who was quoted in an official release.

He asserted that the committee will pursue necessary legal action against anyone discovered to be spreading hate speech or misinformation.

The minister urged people to use social media responsibly and avoid posting anything that can spark violence.

He urged the residents of the state to refrain from indiscriminately forwarding or sharing any such posts because "we are keeping a close watch on social media".

Vij responded to a video of Bajrang Dal member Monu Manesar saying he would participate in the Brij Mandal Jalabhishek procession in Nuh, which was widely shared on social media. Manesar was arrested by the Rajasthan Police in February for the killing of two Muslim men and has been blamed by some for sparking the violence in Nuh.

Vij, however, asserted that Manesar won't be spared, if he has any role, Manesar will not be spared.

He claimed that actual evidence of the Nuh violence was being gathered, and police were also investigating those responsible.
In a democracy, everyone has the right to express their opinions, but the minister urged people to refrain from making laws for themselves.

"Whoever, no matter how small or big he may be, whoever has conspired, whoever has engineered this, whoever has hatched this conspiracy, will not be spared," he stated in reference to the Nuh violence.

Regarding the opposition's criticism of the BJP-led Haryana government for allegedly failing to maintain law and order in the wake of the violence in Nuh, Vij stated that it was not the time to do politics,  since peace needed to be restored in the state, and everyone needed to help. He promised to answer all of the opposition's questions after this.

On Monday, a mob tried to block a VHP march by throwing stones at it and setting cars on fire. This caused racial tension to flare up in the Nuh district.

Conflicts that started in Nuh over an attempt to halt a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession and spread to Gurugram over the past two days have claimed the lives of six persons, including two home guards and a cleric.

The Haryana government said on Wednesday that mobile internet and SMS services will not be available in Nuh and certain other areas of the state till August 5. This was done to try to prevent any disturbances to public order and peace following the communal disputes.

Along with Nuh, the services will also be suspended in Palwal, Faridabad, and the regions covered by Sohna, Pataudi, and Manesar in the district of Gurugram.

The government mandated the suspension of mobile internet and SMS services in the Nuh area beginning at 4 p.m. on Monday due to "intense communal tension" and disruption of public peace. Later, restrictions were imposed until August 2 in other locations.
