Digital Desk: At least three people were killed and several more are believed to be trapped after an illegal coal mine collapsed in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, on Friday.

"A part of the BCCL (Bharat Coking Coal Limited) open mine collapsed. One body has been found. Several deaths have been confirmed. We are awaiting the BCCL report. Action will be taken in accordance with the report," said Sanjeev Kumar, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dhanbad.

Reportedly, the incident happened at around 10.30 a.m. in the Bhowra Colliery region of BCCL, about 21 kilometers from Dhanbad.

An eyewitness claimed that when the mine collapsed, many villagers were engaged in illegal mining.

Three individuals were pulled out from the rubble with the aid of the locals and sent to a hospital, where they were later pronounced dead, a witness said.
