SC directs ED to explain Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest right before Lok Sabha polls

Arvind Kejriwal, detained in Tihar Jail since March 21 in connection to a money laundering case is slated to remain in custody until May 7...

Digital Desk: In a significant development, the Supreme Court mandated the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday to elucidate the rationale behind the timing of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest, particularly in proximity to the Lok Sabha general elections.

The bench presided over by Justice Sanjiv Khanna emphasized the paramount importance of liberty, underscoring the need for transparency in legal proceedings. Justice Khanna pointedly raised concerns over the timing of Kejriwal's arrest, indicating its potential implications in the electoral context.

The court further sought clarification regarding the time lapse between the commencement of legal proceedings and the recurrent filing of complaints by the probe agency. These directives come in the wake of Kejriwal's petition challenging his detention and remand by the Enforcement Directorate in the contentious Delhi liquor policy case.

Scheduled for May 3, the upcoming hearing will witness the ED's response to the court's queries.

Meanwhile, Arvind Kejriwal, detained in Tihar Jail since March 21 in connection to a money laundering case linked to the Delhi liquor policy, is slated to remain in custody until May 7.
