Weather live updates from Cyclone Asani on May 8: It will be the first cyclonic storm of the year to form in the North Indian Ocean, encompassing the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.
Digital Desk: The IMD declared that the cyclonic storm developing in the Bay of Bengal will not make landfall in Odisha or Andhra Pradesh but will instead travel parallel to the coast, providing much-needed respite to the people and government.
On Sunday morning, the system, which has developed into a deep depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjacent Andaman Sea, is expected to deepen into a cyclonic cyclone.
At 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, it was about 280 kilometres west-northwest of Car Nicobar (Nicobar Islands), 290 kilometres southwest of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 1140 kilometres southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), and 1180 kilometres south-southeast of Puri (Odisha).
After approaching the North Andhra-Odisha coast, it is expected to recurve and travel towards the northwest Bay of Bengal, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
It will be the first cyclonic storm of the year to form in the North Indian Ocean, which encompasses the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. In March of this year, a system formed in the Bay of Bengal had intensified up to a deep depression, one stage short of becoming a cyclone.
The system did not strengthen into a storm at the time. The storm forming off India's east coast will be given this name to be named Asani officially.
