Delhi Coal Crisis: New Delhi's hospitals and metro suffers from power shortages in the stifling heat

The Delhi administration has written to the Centre, requesting that it act to ensure that thermal power plants have enough coal.

Digital Desk: Power outages at the Dadri and Unchahar thermal power plants might disrupt the national capital's 24-hour power supply to the Delhi Metro, hospitals, and other key institutions. As a result, the Delhi government has written to the Centre, requesting that it intervene to ensure sufficient coal is available for the thermal power plants.

According to the National Power Portal's daily coal report, coal is in short supply at many of the National Thermal Power Corporation's power plants (NTPC).

Schools, hospitals, and even the Delhi Metro, a necessary form of transportation in the national capital, are likely to be affected, exacerbating the average man's concerns.

On Thursday, Delhi's Power Minister, Satyendar Jain, convened an emergency meeting at the Delhi Secretariat to discuss the coal scarcity. He also wrote to the central government, pleading with it to act and give enough coal to the power plants that supply the national capital with electricity.

The minister stated that there is a severe scarcity of coal in several thermal power plants.

The NTPC's Dadri-II and Jhajjar (Aravalli) power plants were built to supply Delhi's power needs, but these plants have little stock left.

According to the Delhi government, the Dadri, Unchahar, Kahalgaon, Farakka, and Jhajjar power plants supply 1,751 MW of electricity to Delhi daily. Dadri provides the most power (728 MW), while Unchahar provides 100 MW.

As a result, interruptions in power delivery from these two major thermal power plants could significantly cut power supply to the Delhi Metro, hospitals, and other critical institutions around the clock.

According to Jain, the Delhi government closely monitors the situation and makes all feasible steps to ensure that people in various parts of the national capital do not experience power outages.
