Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for multiple development projects worth over Rs 20,000 crore in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, including the opening of the Banihal-Qazigund road tunnel, which will provide all-weather connectivity between the union territory's two regions.
Modi said during the Panchayat Raj Diwas celebrations at Palli Gram Panchayat in Samba that the overall development of the union territory will provide job opportunities for the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.
It's the first visit to J&K of Prime minister Narendra Modi since Article 370 was repealed on August 5, 2019.
Addressing the people of Palli, PM Modi said, "The inauguration and laying of the foundation of the project of Rs 20,000 crores took place today. This will give new impetus to the development of Jammu and Kashmir."
He said it's an important day to speed up the region's development. He further said, "I congratulate the people of Jammu and Kashmir for this".
"Rs 38,000 crores of private investment have been received in J&K in two years compared to Rs 17,000 crores in the last seven decades," PM said in his speech.
The Prime Minister inaugurated the Banihal-Qazigund road tunnel, which will provide all-weather connectivity between the union territory's Jammu and Kashmir regions.
According to officials, the 8.45-kilometer-long tunnel will shorten the road distance between Banihal and Qazigund by 16 kilometers and cut travel time by about one and a half hours.
The Prime Minister also laid the groundwork for three road packages of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, which will cost more than Rs 7,500 crore, and launched the 'Amrit Sarvor' initiative, which aims to develop and revitalize 75 water bodies in each district of the country.
