Mumbai Airport T1 To Be Demolished, Redeveloped: Flights To Shift To Navi Mumbai Airport

Digital Desk: Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport's Terminal 1 will remain shut for renovation later this year. The decision has been taken to transform the terminal and will be executed in various phases to ensure minimum impact on its passengers.

The Mumbai International Airports Limited (MIAL) on January 28 said that once the renovation is completed, it will boost capacity to handle 20 million additional passengers. The T1 will be demolished and redeveloped to increase passenger handling capacity, improving the travel experience at the Mumbai airport.

To cater to the passengers during the renovation time, Terminal 2 and Navi Mumbai International Airport will be used instead of T1. The renovation efforts are carried out to meet the higher demand for air travel as Mumbai continues to expand as a global aviation hub worldwide.

Terminal 1 is expected to handle 20 million people in a single year following the renovation. An official statement published by MIAL suggests that the renovation will increase the T1's capacity to 42% footfall.

According to reports, the extensive renovation project will begin in November 2025 in a phased manner. In the first phase, the present construction will be demolished, and a new terminal will be constructed in place of the existing one.

The MIAL in a statement said, "In November 2025, the transformation of Terminal 1 will proceed in carefully planned phases, ensuring minimal disruption. During the construction, Terminal 2 (T2) will shoulder the additional traffic."

The transformation of the terminal will see major infrastructures including the implementation of landscaping for cooling, multipurpose substations, and an upgraded baggage handover system.

The project is expected to be completed by the year 2029. The CSMIA is managed by Adani Airport Holdings Lts (AAHL).
