Each year, the festival is organised to commemorate the remarkable autumn flowering of Himalayan cherry blossom in the hills of Meghalaya.

Shillong to Ri Bhoi, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced today.
Minister Lyngdoh told reporters at his office in Shillong that the Tourism Department will organise a three-day Cherry Blossom Festival from November 17 to 18.
The Minister of Tourism stated that the department will work out the specifics and notify the public about the festival.
The Tourism Department has released the calendar of events, and according to the calendar, the festivities in Meghalaya will begin in October this year.
The Minister announced a throughout-the-year event strategy to lure more tourists to the state.
Minister Paul Lyngdoh said the state's visitor influx has surpassed 15 lakhs yearly. To increase tourist traffic, the tourism department will complete the process of converting Khyndailad into a pedestrian zone before the commencement of the festivities in October.
The Minister also stated that the Shillong Blues Festival, the date of which has yet to be determined, will be a new attraction this year.
Notably, the celebration will get off with Megha Kayak Fest, an annual whitewater competition hosted at Umtham Village.
The Shillong Literary Festival will be held from November 14 to 16, reported the Tourism Department.
