Assam Government asks Central Government for special package to revive piggery sector

Guwahati: The Assam Government has appealed the Central government to grant a special package to revive the piggery sector in the state, Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora said on Monday.

Minister Atul Bora informed the media after attending a national-level virtual meeting chaired by Union Minister for fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairying Parshottam Rupala.

Minister Bora said, “Assam government has requested the center to provide us a special package to revive the piggery sector in Assam after it hit by African Swine Flu.”

“To continue the number one status of Assam in terms of the pig population in the nation and to save the livelihood of lakhs of households, Assam is in dire need of a special package,” added Bora.

Moreover, Minister Bora also appealed to the centre to provide support for setting up vaccine production and disease diagnostic facilities for animals in the state.

“Vaccine production unit, Institute of Veterinary Biologicals, Guwahati which is the only unit in the entire NE region, needs up-gradation as per the cGMP & FDA norms.” Atul Bora said.

Additionally, Atul Bora said, “The North East Disease Diagnostic Laboratory needs up-gradation with BSL-3 facilities as the region is prone to exotic and transboundary diseases.”
