Digital Desk: Bulldozers arrived into the Assam district of Lakhimpur today as part of a huge eviction effort to clear over 500 hectares of encroached forest land. Many unlawfully living families in the neighbourhood have already demolished their homes and relocated.
Over 800 security officers, including state police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), have been stationed in Pabha Reserve Forest to ensure the eviction process runs well.
Only 29 hectares of the reserve forest's 2,560.25 hectares are devoid of encroachment. According to government documents, hundreds of families have encroached on land in recent decades. According to additional sources, the illegal settlers include people from all around the state as well as locals who were displaced by floods and erosion.
Today, around 500 hectares of land in Adhasona and Mohaghuli villages are being removed in the first phase of evictions.
According to authorities, approximately 100 families will be evicted, while approximately 80 families have already departed.
The movement started at 7:30 a.m., with around 60 excavators and tractors deployed, according to Lakhimpur Additional Superintendent of Police Runa Neog.
