Digital Desk: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread light or moderate showers in most places, with heavy to very heavy rains (115.5 mm-224.5 mm) in isolated locations across Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from June 13-17.
Moreover, isolated extremely heavy downpours (more than 224.5 mm) are expected to hit Assam and Meghalaya between June 14-17.
Due to the heavy precipitation, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Northeast India for Tuesday. However, the advised level will be raised to orange alert on Wednesday and will continue in effect until Saturday.

In the wake of the heavy rainfall, the following are some of the potential impacts over the region:
1. Poor visibility due to heavy rain, causing traffic congestion
2. Temporary traffic disruption due to water logging on roads, uprooting of trees, and falling of tree branches, resulting in increased travel time
3. Tree uprooting may cause damage to the power sector.
4. Possible damage to vulnerable structures and partial damage to kutcha houses and huts.
5. Flash floods caused by heavy rainfall.
6. Waterlogging and flooding in numerous low-lying places
7. Landslides, mudslides, and landslips are extremely likely.
8. Damage to mature standing crops and vegetables
The IMD recommends the following precautions to protect oneself from these effects:
1. Follow any given traffic advice.
2. Stay away from unsafe structures.
3. It is recommended to prop up the vegetable pandals.
4. During thunderstorm or lightning activity, seek shelter.
5. Mulch the crop's base to protect the soil and roots.
6. Farmers have to refrain from working in the fields during thunderstorms or lightning strikes, and suitable procedures must be implemented to prevent drainage in the case of rain.
7. Postpone seeding; if seeds have already been sown, avoid stagnant water in the field and cover the seeded area with natural mulching materials such as straw, agricultural leftovers, wood chips, etc.
8. Keep up-to-date on the latest weather forecasts.
Meanwhile, the ongoing rainy season could save Meghalaya from a power outage. Due to poor rainfall activity in May — Meghalaya recorded only 164.7 mm rain last month, resulting in a 59% shortfall — the water level of the Umiam reservoir in East Khasi Hills, an important source of hydropower in the hill state, reached a historic low of 3,165 ft this month.
However, the reservoir's water levels were significantly raised over the weekend by the first monsoon showers of 2023, and rainfall activity in the coming months should alleviate this issue for good for the rest of the monsoon season.
