Digital Desk: On January 9, 2023, Dima Hasao police destroyed a large amount of captured Burmese betel nuts.
Last year, the shipment was confiscated at the Harangajao police station in the Dima Hasao district while being transferred illegally.
Later, the nuts were sent for testing, and according to the report of the Food Inspector, Forensic Science Laboratory Guwahati, and Central Plantation Research Institute of Kerala, they were burned.
It should be noted that approximately 26 thousand pieces of foreign origin cigarettes were also destroyed throughout the procedure.
All of the destroyed goods were confiscated by Dima Hasao police in Harangajao checkpoint, and the case was filed under Harangajao PS case numbers 8, 9, and 14, 2022.
Earlier that month, on December 30, Cachar police confiscated 2000 kg of Burmese Supari that had been unlawfully smuggled from Mizoram to Assam at the Lailapur checkpoint near the Assam-Mizoram border. The prohibited substance was uncovered and sealed within the vehicle's oil tanker. According to sources, the Burmese Supari was retrieved from the vehicle with the licence plate AS-28-AC-0225.
Saabul Uddin, the driver of the vehicle, has been arrested, according to police. Police stated that they are questioning the arrested driver and that an investigation is ongoing.
Previously, on December 7, Lailapur Police intercepted a truck laden with Burmese Supari in Dhalai. The truck, which was travelling from Mizoram to Assam, was stopped during a Naka check outside the Lailapur police check gate.
Approximately 290 sacks of banned Burmese Supari were seized from the vehicle during the inspection. During the procedure, the truck with the registration number AS 01 LC 4164 was also confiscated.
