Digital Desk: TG Sitharam, former director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, has been appointed chairperson of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
Sitharam, who was appointed last month, succeeded M Jagadesh Kumar, chairperson of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Since Anil D Sahasrabudhe was removed from his duties as AICTE chairman in September of last year, the UGC chairman has had this additional obligation.
Prof Sitharam stated, "I will collaborate with every stakeholder in the Education sector to turn Higher education into huge, well-resourced, lively multidisciplinary centres providing high-quality teaching, innovation, entrepreneurship, research, and community engagement."

From 2019 to 2020, Sitharam was the head of the board of governors at IIT Guwahati. He also served on the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) of the Indian government's department of science and technology. On December 20, he named Parmeshwar K Iyer as interim director of IIT Guwahati before joining AICTE.
Sitharam was also a professor in the department of civil engineering and chair professor of energy and mechanical sciences at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore.
Prof Sitharam has taught at Dalhousie University in Canada, Yamaguchi University in Japan, the Indian School of Mines (IIT-ISM) in Dhanbad, and the University of Hong Kong. He was vice president of the Indian Society of Earthquake Science as well as the Indian Society of Earthquake Technology.
Prof Sitharam is an eminent scholar with decades of knowledge and experience. After earning a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in civil engineering from Mysore University's Govt BDT College of Engineering, Davanagere, he went on to earn a Master of Science degree from IISc and a PhD from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario. In 1994, he finished his post-doctoral studies at the University of Texas at Austin's Center for Earth Sciences and Engineering.
