GMCH superintendent Abhijit Sarma conveys concern upon rising number of Covid-19 cases

Digital Desk: The Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sarma conveyed his concern upon the rising number of Covid-19 cases in Guwahati.

Addressing the media, Abhijit Sarma said that most of the newly detected positive Covid-19 cases are asymptomatic. However, he said that around 10 individuals are presently under treatment and are admitted to the ICU in the GMCH. 

Moreover, Abhijit Sarma informed people that around 271 individuals are undergoing treatment in Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, also known as Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati.

Additionally, Sarma has emphasized that the rising number of Covid-19 cases in Guwahati is the outcome of Guwahati being the hub of the Northeastern region. 

Surgical gastroenterologist specialist Abhijit Sarma has urged the city's people to wear masks and take proper measures to avoid getting positive for the virus. He said that the cases are rising because people are not following any guidelines issued by the government.

At the same time, people are not maintaining social distance, which is why the transmission level is rising in Guwahati. 

Abhijit Sarma also added that the death rate is much lower this time than the surge of the second pandemic wave. However, individuals should not think of this new variant Omicron as a minor issue. 

In Guwahati, a few locations, including Chandmari, Rajgarh, Vasistha, have been identified as coronavirus hotspots.

Assam has recorded a high rate of rising number of Covid-19 cases in the last few days. As a result, the Assam health department has requested district officers to encourage Covid-19 patients to take home isolation in the third wave. 

State health minister Keshab Mahanta lately informed the media that under the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital-managed units, 1,503 beds were ready for fighting the third wave of the virus. However, there can be a chance of scarcity for medical beds compared to the rising number of 2500 cases in the past 10 days in Kamrup Metro.
