Manipur Violence: Firing Reported In Kangpokpi and Bishnupur District
Digital Desk: Intense firing was reported in certain districts of Manipur in the wee hours of Wednesday. The shooting reportedly began at around 4:30 a.m., specifically in the Kangpokpi and Bishnupur districts.
So far, no casualties have been reported. The previous incident of intermittent firing between two communities happened on July 4 between 7 and 8 p.m., reported PTI, quoting security officials.
The exchange of gunfire ceased after this time, and no casualties were reported.
Earlier, on July 4, a group of armed miscreants attempted to steal firearms from the India Reserve Battalion (IRB), which was stationed in a village in Manipur's Thoubal district. A 27-year-old man was killed in the clash between miscreants and security personnel, while an Assam Rifles jawan was shot at.
Reportedly, the mob tried to break into the camp of an India Reserve Battalion in the Khangabok area in order to steal weapons and ammunition.
Soon after, a clash between the forces erupted. Initially, the forces fired teargas shells and rubber bullets to control the situation. However, when the armed mob opened fire, the forces shot back, officials said.
Ethnic Tensions In Manipur
The situation in several parts of Manipur remained tense, with sporadic incidents of violence, according to a statement issued by the state police on Monday. As the violence continues unabated, 118 checkpoints have been set up and 326 individuals have been detained around the state.
Manipur has been witnessing significant ethnic confrontations since May 3, when a Kuki solidarity march was organized by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) to protest the Meitei community's demand for a Scheduled Tribe status took a violent turn.
